Gorgeous dark Amethyst with Realgar matrix base rock, this variety of Amethyst mined in the Kwaggafontein locality of South Africa has been given the name 'Amethystos', the original Greek name for Amethyst, meaning 'not intoxicated', a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness.
